What is Flyball?
Two teams of four enter the race course and get into position. Starters are on their
marks. Teams signal – it’s a go. The noise is deafening. The judge activates the
light tree. Yellow - yellow – GREEN! The race is on!
|
No, it’s not funny car racing or an Olympic relay. It’s the sport of flyball, an
exciting, “anything can happen” relay race for dogs. Because of its all-out, head-to-head
competition, the light tree that starts the races, and the occasional “crash and
burn,” flyball is often described as drag racing for dogs. A big difference between
flyball and drag racing (as well as many other dogsports) is the team aspect of
the sport. Can’t play flyball by yourself. The shapes and sizes, interests and ages
of flyball dogs (and their handlers) is diverse. Melding them into dynamic teams
can be an absorbing, exciting, and even comic, challenge. Ready . . . Set . . .
